Fortaleza  is the state capital of Ceará, located in Northeastern Brazil. It is located 2285 km (1420 miles) from Brasília, the federal capital which belongs to the tropical savanna ecoregion called “Cerrado”, 1498 km (931 miles) from Belém, which is the gateway to the River Amazon  and  is also known as the Metropolis of the Brazilian Amazon region, and 2579 km (1603 miles) from Rio de Janeiro. Fortaleza has developed on the banks of the creek Pajeú, and its toponymy is an allusion to Fort Schoonenborch, which gave rise to the city, built by the Dutch during their second stay in place between 1649 and 1654. The motto of Fortaleza, present in its coat of arms is the Latin word Fortitudine, which in Portuguese means “strength, value, courage.”
